As of January 1, 2003, the Drug Information Service will no longer exist as a separate service and collection. Following are suggestions on how to find information on alcohol, tobacco and other drug use and abuse.
Unique journal and book titles from the Drug Information Service that are not held elsewhere in the University Libraries will be merged into the general collection of the Bio-Medical Library. To locate these materials and other materials on alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use and abuse in the University Library system, go to MNCAT (http://www.lib.umn.edu/books).
To find articles on alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use and abuse, do an article index search. Suggestions include searching Medline, Current Contents, and PsycINFO (https://www.biomedsearch.lib.umn.edu/ovidweb/ovidweb.cgi). You must be affiliated with the University of Minnesota to use these databases from a remote location outside of the University Libraries. If you are not affiliated with the University of Minnesota, you can search PubMed (http://www.pubmed.gov).
For a one-stop source on selected resources for substance abuse, go to Research QuickStart (http://research.lib.umn.edu). Select Substance Abuse.
HealthWeb (http://www.healthweb.org) is a tool to facilitate access to health related resources on the Internet. HealthWeb is a collaborative project of the health science libraries in the Greater Midwest Region of the National Network of the Libraries of Medicine and of the Committee for Institutional Cooperation. Currently, there are over 20 actively participating libraries including the University of Minnesota Bio-Medical Library. Choose Substance Abuse from the main menu.
Information for the general public and educators on alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use and abuse can be found by contacting the Minnesota Institute of Public Health/Minnesota Prevention Resource Center at http://www.miph.org or 763-427-5310 or 1-800-782-1878. Pamphlets, flyers, posters, curricula, newsletters and audiovisual materials are available. The organization also maintains a network of community speakers.
If you have additional questions on how to find information on alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use and abuse, contact the Bio-Medical Library Reference Desk at 612-626-3260 or e-mail to medref@umn.edu.
