The Health Sciences Libraries, in partnership with the Wellness Collaborative, invite you to go online to discover more about wellness. This guide, for the U of M community, provides tips about evaluating online health information, suggests links to high-quality wellness resources, gives additional information about the Wellness Collaborative, and provides contact information for assistance from the Health Sciences Libraries.

For more in-depth wellness resources, watch for a new wellness website coming Spring Semester 2008. The website, sponsored by the Wellness Collaborative and the Health Sciences Libraries for the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities community, will help foster a culture of wellness at the University by featuring campus wellness resources, an electronic version of the Wellness Works magazine, and wellness information from University experts and Wellness Collaborative members.  
What is Wellness?

Wellness is a multi-faceted journey. Wellness is defined by the National Wellness Institute as an active process comprised of six components of health: physical, emotional, social, intellectual, occupational, and spiritual. To learn more, visit their website about the Six Dimensions of Wellness .

Evaluating Online Health and Wellness Information

It’s important to be aware of the quality of health and wellness information. These resources will help you learn to evaluate health and wellness information effectively.

  • Developed by the Medical Library Association to help you translate common "medspeak" terms and solve your Rx riddles. This resource also links to the Association’s list of the top ten most useful health-related websites and gives tips to help you diagnose the quality of websites.

Recommended Online Wellness Resources

Selected high-quality health and wellness resources on the Internet, recommended by the Health Sciences Libraries and the Wellness Collaborative.

  • MedlinePlus has extensive information from the National Institutes of Health and other trusted sources on over 740 diseases and conditions. There are also lists of hospitals and physicians, a medical encyclopedia and dictionaries, health information in Spanish, information on prescription and nonprescription drugs, health news, and links to thousands of clinical trials.
    • MedlinePlus Health News
      Health news from the past 30-90 days of Reuters Health Information and HealthDay. News can be viewed by date or topic.

  • Manage your health with useful and up-to-date information in more than 35 disease and lifestyle categories.

  • Listing of health services and providers throughout Minnesota, with links to reliable health information in MedlinePlus. Part of the National Library of Medicine’s MedlinePlus Go Local initiative.

  • "A non-profit consumer health web site that provides high quality information created and evaluated by medical and health professional faculty at the University of Cincinnati, the Ohio State University, and Case Western Reserve University."

  • Online, free personal health resources recommended by the Health Sciences Libraries. Includes health news, general and disease-specific resources, resources for kids and teens, and more.

  • WellnessWeb is a collaboration of patients, healthcare professionals, and other caregivers. Our mission is help you find the best and most appropriate medical information and support available.

University of Minnesota Wellness Resources

The following departments and services are all members of the University’s Wellness Collaborative .

  • 24-hour crisis line at (612) 626-9111. Services include support groups, advocacy, peer counselors, events, crisis line, crisis intervention, information, and more. Services provided to all victim/survivors of sexual violence, relationship violence, stalking, harassment and/or concerned persons.

  • Boynton offers comprehensive medical services for students, faculty and staff. Their phone number is (612) 625-8400. Boynton has been providing medical care, health education and public services for the University for over 75 years. Their mission is to create a healthy community by working with students, staff, and faculty to achieve physical, emotional, and social well-being. Clinics include primary care, urgent care, and clinics for international travel, eye, dental, women’s health, and mental health. Services include pharmacy, massage, HIV testing, immunizations, smoking cessation, nutrition services, physical therapy, and occupational health.
    • Self-care guide from Boynton Health Service
      A self-care guide aimed at students. Provides information on common health problems like headaches, depression, and sports injuries; lifestyle issues like sexual health, smoking, and exercise; and prevention/safety issues like alcohol/drug safety and immunizations.

  • Purpose is to facilitate and enhance the missions and activities of the University community. The Club provides a common, informal gathering place, a place for broad community interaction, rooms for social and business meetings, and facilities for dining and receptions. Membership in the Campus Club is open to all members of the University community: faculty, staff, students, Regents, alumni and their constituencies.

  • The University of Minnesota’s Center for Spirituality & Healing is a national leader in education, outreach and research in complementary, alternative and culturally based healing practices. Its mission is to transform healthcare accomplished through cutting-edge educational offerings, rigorous scientific research and health improving outreach programs. Their work is inspired with the knowledge that health and well-being are enhanced when the best of complementary and conventional care are integrated.
    • Taking Charge of Your Health
      Free website dedicated to improving health and well-being by helping people make informed, individualized decisions that are right for them. Written by leading experts. Covers three main topics: exploring complementary therapies, creating healthy lifestyles, and navigating the healthcare system. Collaboration between the Center for Spirituality & Healing and the Life Science Foundation.
    • Healthy Matters
      Wellness series created by Boynton Health Service, the Department of Recreational Sports, and Housing & Residential Life, to help students navigate wellness options while at the University of Minnesota. Every week a new Healthy Matters tip will be posted on their website. Each tip will be based on one of the four components of Healthy Matters: healthy body, healthy balance, healthy mind, healthy being.

  • Catalyst for ensuring equal learning and working opportunities for students, faculty, staff and guests with disabilities. Promotes barrier-free environments that facilitate equal opportunities for people with disabilities and that assist the University in meeting its obligations under federal and state statutes. Works to ensure access to University employment, courses, programs, facilities, services, and activities by providing or arranging reasonable accommodations, academic adjustments, auxiliary aids and services, training, consultation, and technical assistance.

  • Provides cost-free professional consultation and referral services for University employees and faculty who are experiencing work and personal-related difficulties.

  • Services and resources to help you find the health information you need, including veterinary and historical information. Includes the Bio-Medical Library, Veterinary Medical Library, and Wangensteen Historical Library of Biology and Medicine.

  • The Wellness Collaborative strives to promote a culture of wellness within the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities community and beyond.

  • Wellness Works is an innovative magazine created for faculty and staff of the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities campus. The semesterly publication is produced by the Department of Recreational Sports in collaboration with the University of Minnesota Wellness Collaborative. With a focus on the six dimensions of wellness, the magazine explores a variety of topics ranging from work-life balance to fitness tips.

  • System-wide University effort to support faculty and staff in managing their work, family, and personal responsibilities.
