Autoalerts are brief information updates automatically generated by a database, search engine, journal publisher's website or blog. The alerts are sent to you as either an e-mail or an RSS feed. This is an easy-to-use technique for staying up to date with news and research literature for a specific discipline or topic. This workshop will demonstrate several methods for setting up autoalerts for your work. The class will be taught utilizing science and health science information resources for demonstration purposes.

Annotated gene information tools provide links to gene and chromosome maps, nucleotide and protein sequences, exons and introns, genetic disorder information, supporting research literature citations, and more. This class will introduce several online tools - available from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) and other organizations - for finding annotated gene information. This online class will introduce new users to the features of Refworks, an online bibliographic management program that can be used to store citation data and format bibliographies for research papers and manuscripts. This class will be presented using UMConnect software.

In this introductory workshop, we will explore various definitions of Web 2.0, its history and evolution and defining characteristics of Web 2.0 applications. We will demonstrate a few quick examples of Web 2.0 applications and how they are being used in health sciences education and practice. Finally, we will discuss some pros and cons of using Web 2.0 applications.

RefWorks is a Web-based bibliographic management service that allows students, faculty, and staff to create personal databases of references. RefWorks allows you to import directly from databases and formats papers in various citation styles.
Topics covered include: Setting up an account, direct exporting, searching MNCAT/PubMed directly, saving citations and importing, and an introduction to working with MS Word and creating bibliographies.

This class will review the standard structure of a scientific research paper. We will discuss each of the basic components of a research paper; Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion (IMRAD), pointing to common mistakes that can be made in writing the different components.
