Health related statistics and data sources are increasingly available on the Internet. They can be found already neatly packaged, or as raw data sets. The most reliable data comes from governmental sources or health-care professional organizations.

    • CDC Wonder
      CDC WONDER presents an array of health related data sets. Each data set can be queried using a series of menus.

      Document collections, such as CDC Prevention Guidelines, are presented in a topic list or table of contents. In some cases, a full text search option is available as well.

      Statistical databases and document databases are presented in a series of "fill in the blanks" request forms. You fill in the forms to specify the criteria for your data request, and then send the request to be processed. If the system is delayed processing your request, however, some queries allow you to retrieve your results later, or you can have them e-mailed to you.

      Topics include: Chronic diseases; Health practice & prevention; Communicable diseases; Injury prevention; Environmental health; Occupational health; Reference data. Can create charts, maps, etc. Data can be used in Word documents/Excel spreadsheets, etc.

  • ResDAC: Research Data Assistance Center
    "The Research Data Assistance Center (ResDAC) is a CMS contractor that provides free assistance to academic, government and non-profit researchers interested in using Medicare and/or Medicaid data for their research. ResDAC is staffed by a consortium of epidemiologists, public health specialists, health services researchers, biostatisticians, and health informatics specialists from the University of Minnesota."

  • Green Book : Background Material and Data on Programs Within the Jurisdiction of the House Committee on Ways and Means
    "The House Ways and Means Committee Green Book provides program descriptions and historical data on a wide variety of social and economic topics, including Social Security, employment, earnings, welfare, child support, health insurance, the elderly, families with children, poverty and taxation. It has become a standard reference work for those interested in the direction of social policy in the United States. It is compiled by the staff of the Committee on Ways and Means of the U.S. House of Representatives. GPO Access contains the Green Book 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2004."
  • Health, United States 2005 : With Chartbook on Trends in the Health of Americans with Special Feature on Adults 55-64 Years
    "Health, United States is an annual report on trends in health statistics. The report consists of two main sections: A chartbook containing text and figures that illustrates major trends in the health of Americans; and a trend tables section that contains 156 detailed data tables. The two main components are supplemented by an executive summary, a highlights section, an extensive appendix and reference section, and an index."

    This site also contains the full texts of the Health, United States issues from 1975 to the present. Some issues include a special focus, such as urban & rural health (2001), drugs (2004) or diabetes (2003).

  • Statistical Abstract of the United States
    Contains a collection of statistics on social and economic conditions in the United States. Selected international data are also included. The Abstract is also a guide to sources of other data from the Census Bureau, other Federal agencies, and private organizations.

    • MMWR: Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report
      National and state data on notificable diseases, as well as a review of a selected health problem. Issues: vol. 31(1982) - present.

      The MMWR Recommendations and Reports contain in-depth articles that relay policy statements for prevention and treatment on all areas in CDC’s scope of responsibility (e.g., recommendations from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices).

    • Surveillance Summeries vol. 32 (1983) - present.

      The CDC Surveillance Summaries provide a means for CDC programs to disseminate surveillance findings, permitting detailed interpretation of trends and patterns based on those findings.

    • National Vital Statistics Report
      This title replaces the Monthly Vital Statistics Report (MVSR) effective with Vol. 47, No. 1.

      Regular issues cover provisional birth, death, marriage, and divorce statistics.

      Four to six special reports are issued per year. Special reports cover final data on births for the previous year, and special topic analyses are issued from time to time.

  • America's Health Rankings 2005: A Call to Action for People and Their Communities.
    United Health Foundation.

    "America’s Health Rankings™ looks at the three public health components -- personal behaviors, community environment and health policies -- and at the overall health outcomes. It combines individual measures of each of these components with the resultant health outcomes into one, comprehensive view of the health of a state. It employs a unique methodology, developed and periodically reviewed by a panel of leading public health scholars, that weights the contributions of various factors, such as smoking, motor vehicle deaths, high school graduation rates, children in poverty, access to care and incidence of preventable disease, to a community’s health. The report is based on data from the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services, Commerce, Education and Labor, the National Safety Council and the National Association of State Budget Officers."

  • Community Health Reports
    Minnesota Hospital Association.

    These reports are the result of a collaborative design effort between local public health, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), and the Minnesota Hospital Association (MHA) to provide information that is useful and can be compared to reports prepared by the MDH. There are three different reports, each prepared at the county level as well as the regional and state level:

    * Discharges and Utilization Rates for Selected Diseases (comparable to the General Mortality PDF report found in the Minnesota Department of Health’s Minnesota Center for Health Statistics, 2004 Minnesota Health Statistics Annual Summary report).

    * Five Leading Causes of Hospitalization (Excluding Births) by Age (includes number of discharges, hospital days and charges)

    * Hospitalization Rates by Clinical Classifications Software (CCS) Chapter and Age Group.

    Datanet is an online system consisting of summarized statistical information designed to serve Minnesota’s governments, businesses, schools, nonprofit agencies and citizens. The system contains statistics about social, economic and demographic conditions in Minnesota. Datanet delivers 200,000 reports, maps and data downloads annually.

    Statehealthfacts.org is a project of the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation and is designed to provide free, up-to-date, and easy-to-use health data on all 50 states. Statehealthfacts.org provides data on more than 500 health topics and is linked to both the Kaiser Family Foundation website (www.kff.org) and KaiserNetwork.org (www.kaisernetwork.org).

  • DOLPHIN :Data Online for Population, Health & Nutrition

    "DOLPHN was created in response to the numerous data requirements of USAID health staff and AIM Project data analysts to meet indicator-reporting needs. DOLPHN contains over 70 key health indicators obtained from 11 carefully selected and internationally recognized data sources. The various sources of the data use a variety of research methodologies including population-based surveys, estimates, and projections to derive the statistics.   • HESonline: Hospital Episode Statistics
    "HES is the national statistical data warehouse for England of the care provided by NHS hospitals and for NHS hospital patients treated elsewhere. HES is the data source for a wide range of healthcare analysis for the NHS, government and many other organisations and individuals."
  • HNPStats
    The World Bank’s Health, Nutrition and Population data platform.

    "HNPStats is a one-stop data source for health, nutrition and population indicators from various national and international data sources. It provides direct access to more than 100 indicators, with time series for countries and country groups from 1960 to the most recent year, where data are available."

  • Human Mortality Database
    Created to provide detailed mortality and population data to researchers, students, journalists, and policy analysts. Contains information from 28 countries. Data is free to use, but does require registration. From a project initiated at the Department of Demography at the University of California, Berkeley and the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research.
  • InfoNation
    Searchable database of countries belonging to the United Nations. Allows comparisons between countries of such factors as economy, population and social indicators
  • Life Tables for 191 Countries: World Mortality in 2000
    "Beginning with the year 1999, WHO began producing annual life tables for all Member States. These life tables have several uses and form the basis of all WHO’s estimates about mortality patterns and levels world-wide. A key use of these life tables is in the construction of healthy life expectancy (HALE) which is the basic indicator of population health levels used by WHO."
  • National Statistics Online: Health Statistics Quarterly
    "The latest trends in the UK’s health are covered in Health Statistics Quarterly (HSQ), a sister publication to Population Trends. Published in February, May, August and November, it presents current information in an easy to read format, beginning with an overview of the latest news, and a review of related publications for release. It contains commentary on the latest health findings, topical articles illustrated with colour charts and diagrams, and regularly updated statistical graphs and tables. It also highlights trends in health, and details the latest quarterly information on deaths, childhood mortality, cancer survival, abortions, congenital anomalies and morbidity."
  • Nationmaster.com: Health Statistics
    A website that allowes users to generate graphs based on numerical data extracted from the CIA World Factbook. Data from other sources are also included.

    Provides nation comparative statistics on a wide range of health indicators. Each indicator may be viewed as a bar chart or map, with some indicators also available as pie charts.

  • Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD): Health Statistics
    The OECD has been one of the world’s largest and most reliable sources of comparable statistics, and economic and social data. As well as collecting data, the OECD monitors trends, analyses and forecasts economic developments and researches social changes or evolving patterns in trade, environment, agriculture, technology, taxation and more.

    Sample and frequently requested data available for free. Complete down-loadable database requires a fee.

  • Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)
    "The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is an international public health agency with 100 years of experience in working to improve health and living standards of the countries of the Americas. It serves as the specialized organization for health of the Inter-American System. It also serves as the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization and enjoys international recognition as part of the United Nations system."

  • WHOSIS: World Health Organization Statistical Information System
    "The WHO Statistical Information System is the guide to health and health-related epidemiological and statistical information available from the World Health Organization. Most WHO technical programmes make statistical information available, and they will be linked from here. You also have the possibility to search by keywords within the WHOSIS or throughout the entire WHO site."

      Peer-reviewed European information on communicable disease surveillance and control. Portions are updated weekly, monthly and quarterly.
    • Weekly Epidemiological Record
      The Weekly Epidemiological Record (WER) serves as an essential instrument for the rapid and accurate dissemination of epidemiological information on cases and outbreaks of diseases under the International Health Regulations and on other communicable diseases of public health importance, including the newly emerging or re-emerging infections.

  • Health Care Costs and Utilization
    • HCUPnet
      "HCUPnet is an on-line query system that gives access to the largest set of all-payer health care databases that are publicly available. Generate tables and graphs on national and regional statistics and trends for community hospitals in the U.S. In addition, community hospital data are available for those States that have agreed to participate in HCUPnet.

      HCUPnet is part of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). HCUPnet generates statistics using data from HCUP’s Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS), the Kids’ Inpatient Database (KID), and the State Inpatient Databases (SID).

      HCUP data are used for research on hospital utilization, access, charges, quality and outcomes. The data are used to describe patterns of care for uncommon as well as common diseases, to analyze hospital procedures, including those that are performed infrequently, and to study the care of population sub-groups such as minorities, children, women, and the uninsured. Researchers and policymakers use HCUP data to identify, track, analyze and compare hospital statistics at the national, regional and State levels.

    • Hospital Compare
      Tool provides information on how well the hospitals in an area care for all their adult patients with certain medical conditions. Helps compare the quality of care hospitals provide. Hospital Compare was created through the efforts of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and organizations that represent hospitals, doctors, employers, accrediting organizations, other Federal agencies and the public.
      • Medicare Search & Compare Databases
        "Have the option of downloading the data used in the search and compare tools onto your computer. Please note that the download-able databases are zipped Microsoft Access databases, for use primarily by health policy researchers and the media. In order to use the download-able databases, you must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Access."
    • MEPS: Medical Expenditure Panel Survey
      The Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) is a set of large-scale surveys of families and individuals, their medical providers, and employers across the U.S. MEPS is the most complete source of data on the cost and use of health care and health insurance coverage.

      MEPS currently has two major components: the Household Component and the Insurance Component. The Household Component provides data from individual households and their members, which is supplemented by data from their medical providers. The Insurance Component is a separate survey of employers that provides data on employer-based health insurance.

      MEPS also includes a Medical Provider Component (MPC), which covers hospitals, physicians, home health care providers, and pharmacies identified by MEPS-HC respondents. Its purpose is to supplement and/or replace information received from the MEPS-HC respondents.

    • Minnesota Hospital Quality Report
      Gives a snapshot of hospitals’ performance in three key areas: heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia. Can quickly see how often a particular Minnesota hospital provides the care that is expected when patients have one of these three conditions. Can also easily compare how different hospitals perform.
      • State Health Workforce Profiles
        Available state by state.

        Highlights compile 2000 data on levels of employment, projected growth and key environmental factors that affect demand for health care. Details for medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, mental health and aides.

      • U.S. Health Workforce Personnel Factbook
        National Center for Health Workforce Analysis.

        A compilation of data from more than a dozen professional associations and government agencies. With 67 detailed tables, the Factbook paints a comprehensive, descriptive picture of the health care workforce.

    • National Hospital Discharge Survey
      The NHDS collects data from a sample of approximately 270,000 inpatient records acquired from a national sample of about 500 hospitals.

      "The medical abstract form and the automated data tapes contain items that relate to the personal characteristics of the patient. These items include age, sex, race, ethnicity, marital status, and expected sources of payment. Administrative items such as admission and discharge dates (which allow calculation of length of stay), as well as discharge status are also included. Medical information about patients includes diagnoses and procedures coded to the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM)."

    • Safety Net Profile Tool
      Access to all the data included in the Safety Net Monitoring Initiative. 118 measures are available for 30 States and the District of Columbia, including 355 counties and 172 cities in 90 metropolitan areas, as well as all 1,818 counties (both metropolitan and non-metropolitan) in those States. The Profile Tool will guide you step-by-step to obtain the statistics you need, and can be used to generate reports that compare multiple measures for one or more geographic areas.

        National Center for Injury Prevention and Control

        WISQARS (Web-based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System) is an interactive database system that provides customized reports of injury-related data.

      • Fatatlity Analysis Reporting System (FAS)
        "The Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) contains data on all vehicle crashes in the United States that occur on a public roadway and involve a fatality. This FARS Query System provides interactive public access to fatality data through this web interface."

        Includes reports on trends, crashes, vehicles, people and states and a search-able database.

      March of Dimes

      Provides free access to US, state, county, and city maternal & infant health data. Contains over 60,000 graphs, maps and tables.

    • VitalStats
      From the National Center for Health Statistics, a collection of vital statistics products including tables, data files, and reports that allow users to access and examine vital statistics and population data interactively.

      Currently only births and perinatal mortality is available.

In addition to maps with age-adjusted death rates for each HSA, the atlas includes maps that compare each HSA rate to the national rate, smoothed maps for each cause that show the broad geographic patterns at selected ages, and a chart with regional rates for each cause of death."

      Contains mortality and population counts for all U.S. counties. Counts and rates of death can be obtained by underlying cause of death, state, county, age, race, sex, and year.
