Emphysema surgery deemed dangerous for very sick patients

Newspaper Article Synopsis:

A federal study that is trying to determine if surgery for advanced emphysema is clinically sound has found that 16% of participants died within one month of the procedure. The patients that died had undergone lung volume reduction surgery and were all extremely ill. Others with similar conditons who were slated for surgery will now not undergo the treatment.
