Searching for Journal Articles

The University of Minnesota offers several databases for locating articles about Alternative and Complementary medicine. There are also several free databases on the Internet that contain journal citations.

AMED (Allied and Alternative Medicine) is now available for University of Minnesota faculty, staff, and students through the BioMedSearch system.

MEDLINE database may be used to search for articles about topics in Alternative Medicine. The Bio-Med library offers access to MEDLINE and other health science databases through BioMedSearch. MEDLINE is also available at no cost on the internet through PubMed. In general, use Medical Subject headings for your search when developing a search in Medline.

Agricola (http://agricola.nal.usda.gov)
access to bibliographic data on how to grow herbs and medicinal plants and includes references from The Herb Research Foundations' HerbalGram.

Datadiwan (http://www.datadiwan.de/index_e.htm)
Database of holistic medicine containing about 5000 citations. Some of the database is in English, the rest is German.

Hypnosis and Related States Research Database (http://hypnosis-research.org/hypnosis/agreement.html?next_page=menu_user.html)
Database from the Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis containing 11465 references to hypnosis related materials in journals and books.

IBIDS Database (http://ods.od.nih.gov/databases/ibids.html)
IBIDS contains bibliographic records, including abstracts published in international scientific journals on the topic of dietary supplements, including vitamins, minerals, herbal and botanical supplements from the Office of Dietary Supplements at the NIH.

National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (http://nccam.nih.gov/)
Division of the NIH concerned with Alternative Medicine. Resources include the CAM citation index listing articles from 1963-present, research grant information, and bibliographies.

Native Health History Database (http://hsc.unm.edu/library/nhd)
Database by the Indian Health Service and the University of New Mexico covering the history of Native Heath with citations from 1652 to 1970. Contains citations regarding traditional foods, herbal remedies, shamanism, etc.

Databases from the U.S. Agricultural Research Service giving the chemical properties in plants and their ethnobotanical uses.

HerbMed (http://www.herbmed.org)
Evidence-based Herb information from the Alternative Medicine Foundation.

Native American Ethnobotany Database (http://herb.umd.umich.edu)
Database of the materials found in the book, American Indian Ethnobotany by Daniel E Moerman PhD at University of Michigan. Information includes plant use, and references.

SouthWest School of Botanical Medicine (http://www.all-natural.com/herbindx.html)
This website contains numerous medicinal plant images as well as several fulltext herb manuals, textbooks, as well as many historical works.

Tropical Plant Database (http://rain-tree.com/plants.htm)
Commercial database of plants from the Amazon including basic information, references and direct links to MEDLINE and other databases, including images.
