Finding Tests, Surveys, and Questionnaires

The University of Minnesota Libraries have many resources for locating copies and/or reviews of standard tests, surveys, questionnaires, and other measurement instruments. Resources in the Bio-Medical Library cover the general areas of health and human psychology, while Wilson Library emphasizes psychology and educational tests. Listed below are some of the resources at the Bio-Medical Library that you may find useful. Additionally, the APA has written a guide to help find psychological tests. Books:

Assessing alcohol problems : a guide for clinicians and researchersJohn P. Allen, Megan Columbus. [WM34 A846 1995]

This book contains general information about assessing alcohol problems. The book includes copies of the instruments and questionnaires discussed in the text.

A compendium of neuropsychological tests : administration, norms, and commentary / Otfried Spreen, 2nd ed New York : Oxford University Press, 1997. [REF WL39 S768c 1998]

Reviews of neuropsychological tests listed by topic. Reviews include the purpose, source, description, administration and scoring of commonly used tests.

Handbook of neurologic rating scales/ Robert M. Herndon. New York : Demos Vermande, 1997. [REF WL141 H23648 1997]

A variety of neurological scales designed for patient assessment in areas such as movement, rehabilitation, Traumatic Brain Injury, pediatric development and epilepsy. Tests are included.

Handbook of psychiatric measures/ Task Force for the Handbook of Psychiatric Measures. Washington, D.C.: American Psychiatric Association. [REF WM34 A512 2000]

For each psychiatric measures, its goals, description, practical issues, psychometric properties, clinical utility, and references are included. An accompanying CD-ROM includes copies of many of the measures in the handbook.

Maternal substance use assessment methods reference manual : a review of screening and clinical assessment instruments for examining maternal use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs / Rockville, Md: U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, 1993. [HV5823.5 .U5 M425 1993]

This book reviews a wide range of clinical screening and assessment instruments that are available to evaluate alcohol, tobacco, and drug use in adults, adolescents, and pregnant women.

Measurement tools in patient education / Barbara k. Redman. New York: Springer, 1998. [REF W85 M485 1998]

This book includes 52 instruments for measuring outcomes in patient education. Each measure includes short critique and references.

Measures for psychological assessment : a guide to 3,000 original sources and their applications / Ki-Taek Chun, Sidney Cobb, John R.P. French, Jr. Ann Arbor, Mich. : Survey Research Center, Institute for Social Research, 1975. [REF Z5814.P8 C559m 1975]

Lists the original journal articles where measurements and tests were first recorded. This book has an index by subject and one by author, but no index by test name.

Measuring health : a guide to rating scales and questionnaires / Ian McDowell, Claire Newell. 2nd ed. New York : Oxford University Press, 1996. [REF WA900.1 M478m 1996]

Reviews of tests and rating scales used by clinicians to measure physical or psychological status. Tests cover topics such as physical disability, social health, well-being, depression, mental status, and pain measurement.

The Mental measurements yearbook (Buros Institute). Highland Park, N.J. : The Yearbook, 1938-95. [REF Z5814 .P8 M549]

Reviews of tests and rating scales used by clinicians to measure physical or psychological aspects of patients. Tests are listed by functionality and cover topics such as physical disability, social health, well-being, depression, mental status, pain measurement, and QOL. Individual reviews of psychological tests in multiple volumes. Reviews include an introduction, practical application, uses, and technical aspects of each test. A cumulative index is found in the most recent volume.

Tests : a comprehensive reference for assessments in psychology, education, and business / Richard C. Sweetland, Daniel J. Keyser, general editors. 3rd ed. Austin, TX : Pro-Ed, 1991. [REF BF176 T345 1991]

Contains assessment test information for psychology, education, and business. Contains copyright date, population, purpose, description, format, scoring, cost and publisher of each test.

  • Health and Psychosocial Instruments (HAPI). Pittsburgh, PA : Behavioral Measurement Database Services) -Bibliographic database with abstracts regarding tests.

  • MEDLINE and CINAHL - Bibliographic databases of journal of articles; combine the subject for which you want to test (e.g., pain threshold) with a methods subject heading such as data collection or questionnaires. CINAHL is searchable by instrument name, with some full text available.

Buros Institute of Mental Measurements: (http://www.unl.edu/buros)

  • ERIC/AE Test Locator is a searchable database that gives a brief description and contact information for tests. The Test Review Locator searches Mental Measurement Yearbooks and Test Critiques and gives the volume where reviews are found.

Social Sciences Tests and Measurement (http://subject.lib.umn.edu/socsci/edpsyctests.html)

  • For information on how to find test and measurement tools in the social sciences, this online guide prepared by staff at Wilson Library is a helpful resource.
