PowerPoint Resources

 
This page supports the PowerPoint classes taught at the Bio-Medical Library, including PowerPoint: The Basics, PowerPoint: Beyond the Basics, and PowerPoint: Posters and PDAs. The PowerPoint classes are taught on PCs using the 2003 version of PowerPoint. Each class typically includes hands-on time.
Help Resources

  • Free to U of M students, staff and faculty. We offer a variety of instructional classes on topics such as navigating library resources, database search techniques, and PowerPoint presentations.

      Includes a chapter about PowerPoint presentations as well as a chapter on presenting at meetings.

    • Perfect Medical Presentations: Creating Effective PowerPoint Presentations for the Healthcare Professional

      PowerPoint information tailored for healthcare professionals. Chapters include topics such as digital images, adding images and video, clinical photography and scanning, designing posters, interactive teaching, and more. A CD is included with the book.

  • Campus Resources

    There are several class offerings on the Twin Cities campus that can help you learn more about using PowerPoint.

    • This online and in-person class from the Center for Teaching and Learning provides information about using PowerPoint in the classroom. It includes information about active learning strategies, handouts, assessment, and using PowerPoint to create games.
    • Bio-Medical Library--in library use

      PowerPoint is available for patron use on workstations in the Bio-Medical Library.

    • This section of the U of M Images Library includes PowerPoint templates. Users need to register for access before being able to download photos, marks, or templates.
  • Online Tutorials

    Online tutorials abound for PowerPoint. You might try looking on the Web for tutorials or help information. Some examples are listed below.

    • Although geared to K-12 teachers, any user can learn the basics of PowerPoint with this fun, unique tutorial.
Images
  • Authentication Required
    The world’s most detailed 3D model of human anatomy available online created by Primal Pictures. Includes features such as interactive zoom, rotation, angle, interactive layers, extensive text, MRI, clinical slides and xrays, live action movies, animations, radiology slides, dissection videos and slides, surface anatomy videos and slides. Focuses on muscles, ligaments, nerves, veins, arteries, bones.

  • Handout from the University of California that walks users through a three-step process to acquire and use digital images.
  • Authentication Required
    images.MD compiles over 48,000 high-quality images spanning all of internal medicine, all derived from Current Medicine’s series of illustrated atlases. Each image is accompanied by detailed and informative text. After registering for a free account, images can be put into "My Slides" and e-mailed to the user as a PowerPoint presentation.

      There are many examples of free PowerPoint poster templates available for downloading from the Internet. You might try Googling "free powerpoint poster templates" to find some examples.

  • You can find many free PowerPoint templates on the Web. Try a Google search or go to the Microsoft page. Or, use this link to find some fun and interesting templates.
Tips & Tricks
  • Blackout screen during presentation

    If you want to black out your screen while you are presenting, press [Shift] and the B key at the same time. Your screen will black out. To end the black screen and resume your slideshow, press [Shift] and the [B] key again.
