Borrowing Services |
Identification
Individuals wishing to borrow materials from the Bio-Medical Library must show a current University of Minnesota ID or library-issued borrowing card. Card holders with overdue materials or unpaid fines/fees will be blocked from checking out materials until the block is cleared.
Loan Periods
Loan periods vary depending on borrower status and type of material. Always check your date due slips carefully. "High Demand" items, Reference materials, and Course Reserve items may have limited or no circulation.
| Material Type | Loan Period | Renewals | |||||
| Books | 6 weeks | Unlimited, up to 18 weeks | |||||
| Bound Periodicals | 1 day | 3 | |||||
| Unbound Periodicals | Overnight (available after 3:30PM, due back at 8:30AM) | None |
Any patron with an active library borrowing card may request to have their library materials renewed. Books may be renewed in any of the following ways:
Patrons can keep most materials they have checked out for at least 2 weeks; after that time, a book is subject to recall. Items that have been recalled are due in approximately 7 days unless requested by course reserve. Recalled materials not returned will result in blocked borrowing privileges and may incur substantial fines. Recall dates supersede all previous due dates.
Library patrons are notified by email or U.S. mail when material is recalled.
To place recalls:
Library patrons may also recall over the phone by calling the Circulation Desk at 612-626-4045.
You will be notified by email when recalled items become available. Returned items are held for pick up at the Circulation Desk on the 3rd floor of the Bio-Medical Library.
TOPLibrary materials are due by the date given when an item is checked out. Overdue notices are courtesy notices only. Failure to receive an overdue notice will not be accepted as a reason to cancel fines. Fines are assessed at the rates listed below. Borrowing privileges will be blocked due to unpaid fines.
Books:
Overdue - $.50 per day/$15 maximum
Recalled - $1.00 per day/$20 maximum
Rush Recalled - $5.00 per day/$50 maximum
Periodicals:
Overdue - $3.00 per day/$15 maximum
Reserve Materials:
Overdue - $1.50 per hour/$15.00 maximum
*Rates are subject to change without prior notice
Library materials not returned will be subject to maximum overdue fines, replacement costs, and a $10.00 processing fee.
Borrowers may provide the library with a replacement of the lost item that is of the same or a later edition. Note that overdue and processing fees will still apply, but the replacement fee will be waived.
If an item that has been billed as lost is returned, replacement and processing fees will be waived, but the patron is still responsible for any overdue fines. Should a patron pay for a lost item, and later find and return it to the library within one year from the payment date, the patron will be refunded the replacement fee only.
Fines incurred at the Bio-Medical Library can be paid by cash, check or credit card. In addition, currently enrolled students have the option of transferring library fines to their Student Account. Please see below for information on each payment option.
You may pay your library fines with cash ONLY at the Bio-Medical Library. Other University Libraries DO NOT accept cash payments. Payments can be made at either the 2nd or 3rd Floor Circulation Desks.
Please make checks payable to the University of Minnesota. Check payments may be made at Bio-Med, Wilson, Walter or Magrath Libraries. You may also mail your checks to the address below. Questions? Please call us at 612-626-4045. There is a $20 charge for all returned checks.

TOPAll library borrowers are subject to blocked borrowing privileges if they have overdue or lost materials or unpaid fines/fees. Due to system security procedures only selected staff are authorized to look at your records or to negotiate the removal of a block.
You will NOT be subject to blocks if you return/renew your materials on a timely basis.
The library can provide you with a list of materials currently charged to you. If you need such a list contact the circulation desk (612-626-4045 or by email.). By law, this is private and confidential information, therefore issuing such lists is regulated by strict security procedures.

The automated circulation system uses the address in your official University record. If you have listed a campus address, that is the address to which all notices will be sent. Please be sure your address is accurate. If the address in the University files is not current, you will not receive essential library communications.
Students may change their address electronically through the One Stop.
Staff and faculty may change their address through One Stop or contact their department.
If you have a temporary address change, the library can enter a temporary override so that mail can be sent to a different address for a specified period of time. To request a temporary change of address, call (612) 626-4045 or email your request.
