The Health Sciences Libraries collections promote excellence in the teaching, research, clinical care and outreach programs of the Academic Health Center's Schools of Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, and Dentistry, the College of Pharmacy and Veterinary Medicine, and the Allied Health Professions by providing information and learning matierals that reflects the current state of knowledge and practice in the health and biomedical sciences.
The monograph collection, containing over 155,000 print and non-print titles, is located on the fourth level of the library. Older titles (1921-ca.1980) are arranged according to the Dewey Decimal Classification system, and newer titles are organized under the National Library of Medicine classification system. Additionally, materials of all formats are shelved with the monograph collection if they are assigned a call number. Library users will also find videos, DVDs, computer disks, microfilm and microfiche titles classified and shelved in the book collection.
The journal collection of over 300,000 print volumes is shelved alphabetically by title on levels three (A-F) and two (G-Z). The library currently subscribes to approximately 1600 health sciences journal titles; the total number of print journal titles in the library exceeds 12,000. Journal backfiles are bound and maintained in the collection.
Located on level 2 (tunnel level), the reference collection consists of approximately 1300 titles collected to support the reference service of the library. A keyword search of MNCAT using the term biomref will retrieve a list of the titles in the reference collection.
Located on level 2 adjacent to the reference desk, the Consumer Health collection consists of approximately 175 titles selected to provide non-technical medical information to users of the library. The complete collection can be retrieved by a keyword search of MNCAT using the keyword biomrefc.
All titles are cataloged and appear in MNCAT, the online catalog of the University of Minnesota Libraries. The libraries encourage suggestions from the University's Academic Health Center faculty, students and staff regarding the purchase of titles.
