The Bio-Medical Library offers 70 public use computers, which are located on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors of Diehl Hall. There are both Windows and Macintosh productivity workstations which have access to the Internet and productivity software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. All public workstations are capable of supporting USB flash drive use, and CD burning capability. There are a number of machines that have educational technology software installed, and additional titles are available for check out at the Circulation Desk. 

Additional Services:

  • Adaptive Technology
    • JAWS - stands for "Job Access with Speech" is an innovative screen reading program for Windows that enables visually impaired individuals to access the information on a personal computer.
    • Microsoft W2K - contains several accessibility features such as "On-screen Keyboard", "Narrator" text-to-speech utility, and the "Magnifier" which is a display utility that makes the computer screen more readable for people who have low vision. It also contains feature for following a mouse pointer and text editing.
  • Printing from public computers
    • Printing is available from all productivity and research public computers. For cost or other information, please stop by the 2nd floor Service Desk, or the Circulation Desk on the 3rd floor. Color printing is also available on the 3rd floor. 
  • Scanning
    • A scanner is available for patron use to create and manipulate images and text. Software available on this workstation includes Adobe Acrobat 6.0, Adobe PhotoShop 7.0, Microsoft Office 2000 and Microsoft Publisher. These programs allow users to convert text and images to a variety of formats, and to edit or manipulate images to be exported to applications such as a PowerPoint presentation. Users can save their images or text in a variety of ways which include saving to a floppy, Zip disk, or flash drive, or by burning them to CD.
  • Wireless Access
    • The Bio-Medical Library provides wireless connections, for those who are using wireless PCMCIA cards on campus. These areas include the main study areas on the second and fourth floors, and limited coverage on the third floor. The library also offers 8 private study/group study rooms with wireless access on the second floor. Public etherjack connections are not available in the Bio-Medical Library at this time. Please remember that you must use your Internet ID (X500) authentication user name and password to access the wireless network.

  • Help from a computer consultant (current U of M students, staff and faculty only)
    • Do you have a question about a specific software program, need to report a problem, or have other computer questions? Then Ask Us!
    • To report a problem or ask a question: Computing Services staff check for incoming requests and trouble reports twice a day, Mon-Fri, and will try to send a response back to you via e-mail within one working day. If this turnaround time does not meet your needs, you can stop by the Reference Desk on the 2nd floor of Diehl Hall, and you will be referred to a member of our Computing Services Staff. 
  • Flash Drives
    • All public workstations are capable of supporting USB flash drive use. Due to location, some machines require the assistance of a library staff person to plug in your drive. If you have any questions please see the Reference Desk on the second floor of the library.
  • Self Help Guides
    • Self Help Guides available for assistance with CD burning, use of flash drives, scanning, printing from SAS, and HIPAA.
