A screen name is the name you use when you set up an account in one of the major IM providers (see above). You have to set up an account and choose a screen name with one of the vendors mentioned above before you can use the Bio-Medical Library’s IM service.
Q. Where can I get IM software and sign up for a screen name?
Download software at these sites:
AIM (AOL Instant Messenger)
Google Talk
MSN (Windows Live Messenger)
Yahoo!
U of MN Jabber
Q.Can I use IM if I’m on a computer that doesn’t have any of this software?
You can use a web-based program called Meebo to log into your AIM, GoogleTalk, MSN, or Yahoo accounts.
Q.What about privacy?
The library may save a transcript your IM session to be used for training and evaluation purposes only. All identifying information you may provide in an IM session will be stripped away before any training or evaluation. Any information you provide will be confidential.
Instant messaging providers have their own privacy policies and you should check the individual provider’s web site for more details on how they may be using your personal information.
